On November 12, 2020, the National Intellectual Property Administration Public Service Platform for Intellectual Property Operation, together with the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, released the *Research Report on the Quality of China’s Artificial Intelligence Patents*.
The status of patent applications can truly reflect the current situation and development of the technology from a side perspective. China’s patent applications in artificial intelligence have surpassed those of the United States, making China the country with the highest number of patent applications in the AI field. This shows that China has achieved world-renowned development and accomplishments in artificial intelligence.
However, the *Research Report on the Quality of China’s Artificial Intelligence Patents* also points out that while the number of patent applications in China’s AI field has grown rapidly, problems still exist, such as insufficient innovative outputs and a low level of overseas patent portfolio layout.
First, let us understand artificial intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that studies theories, methods, technologies and application systems for simulating, extending and expanding human intelligence. It is also a branch of computer technology, which attempts to understand the essence of intelligence and produce a new intelligent machine that can respond in a similar way to human intelligence.
